How a Luxor Day Trip from Hurghada Works
A pre-dawn pickup, about four hours on the desert road, the West Bank and Karnak, and the drive back after dark.
A Pre-Dawn Pickup
Pickups run from about 3:30 to 6 am, depending on the tour and on how far south your hotel is. The operator confirms the time and your hotel by message the day before. Eat breakfast, or ask your hotel for a breakfast box.
Four Hours on the Desert Road
From Hurghada the road runs south to Safaga, then west across the Eastern Desert to Qena on the Nile and south to Luxor: about 295 km. Tour vehicles stop at police checkpoints on the way, and most make one rest stop.
The West Bank, Then Karnak
On the West Bank, the Valley of the Kings (about two hours, with three tombs on the standard ticket), the Colossi of Memnon and, on most tours, Hatshepsut's temple. After lunch, Karnak on the East Bank, usually for about two hours.
Back After Dark
The drive back leaves Luxor in the late afternoon and reaches the Red Sea resorts after dark, 13 to 14 hours after pickup. Carry small change for toilets and tips, and a layer for the air-conditioned van.

The Guide
How a Luxor Day Trip from Hurghada Really Works
Eight hours on the road, five or six in Luxor, and a handful of choices that decide whether the day feels worth it.
A Luxor day trip from Hurghada is a day of about 13 to 14 hours: roughly four hours each way on the desert road, and five or six hours in Luxor for the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and lunch. The tour this page puts first is Ranco Travel’s Luxor Tour with Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun: a small group of at most 12, three royal tombs plus Tutankhamun’s, the Colossi of Memnon, Karnak Temple and lunch, from US$93 a person in current promotion (usually US$98) (checked October 2026), rated 4.9 out of 5 from 2,873 reviews. It is the fastest-growing Luxor trip from the Red Sea on GetYourGuide: about 470 new reviews in the three weeks to 25 October 2026.

What the day looks like
The day starts in the dark. Ranco Travel’s listing puts the pickup at about 6:00 am and confirms the exact time and your hotel by message around 1 pm the day before; other operators collect between 3:30 and 5:30 am, and the further south your hotel (Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh, Soma Bay), the later the pickup. The van takes about four hours each way, with one or two rest stops. In Luxor the listing allows about two hours in the Valley of the Kings, 20 minutes inside Tutankhamun’s tomb, half an hour at the Colossi of Memnon, an hour for lunch, half an hour at an alabaster workshop and two and a half hours at Karnak, with a photo stop outside Luxor Temple, before the drive back.

Recent guests describe the same rhythm. A British guest picked up in Sahl Hasheesh this October wrote: “an early start, 5.30am for us… The drive was about 4 hours with a couple of short stops, and really didn’t feel bad at all.” A Dutch guest the same week summed it up as “about 13 hours, 2x 4 hours travel and 5 hours in Luxor”. Groups this October had two drivers sharing the wheel.
Other ways to do it
The most reviewed: Ranco Travel’s Luxor Day Trip from Hurghada, Small Group adds Hatshepsut’s temple and a short boat crossing of the Nile; Tutankhamun’s tomb is an option you select. The lowest price for a small group: FTS Travels’ Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun trip includes Hatshepsut and Karnak, and lets you choose Tutankhamun’s tomb or the tomb of Ramses V and VI. By big bus: Ranco Travel’s Luxor Day Trip by big bus is the lowest price with the entry tickets named in the listing, on a bus with a toilet on board; Book Tour Egypt’s Luxor by big bus is the same day with an Egyptologist guide. With a sunrise balloon: Nice Tours’ Luxor Day Tour and Sunrise Balloon Ride picks you up at 11 pm, flies you over the West Bank at dawn and then does the sights, 18 hours in all; the balloon guide explains the catch. Two days, one night: Ranco Travel’s 2-Day Luxor Tour adds Luxor Temple and a 4-star hotel night.

Which tombs the ticket covers
Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities sells the standard Valley of the Kings ticket at EGP 750 for a foreign adult (EGP 375 for a student), and it opens three of the tombs that are open that day; which ones rotates. Tutankhamun’s tomb is a separate ticket (EGP 700), as are Seti I’s (EGP 2,000) and the shared tomb of Ramses V and VI (EGP 220), prices on egymonuments.gov.eg in October 2026. The three small-group tours above list the standard ticket as included, and the one this page leads with includes Tutankhamun too; the big-bus listing names the visit without itemising the ticket, so check it at checkout. Two things recent guests point out: Tutankhamun’s tomb is small, and the Ramses V and VI tomb was “much quieter than the others” and, for several, the highlight. The Valley of the Kings tickets guide goes through every ticket and which tour includes which.

What costs extra on the day
The listing price covers the transport, the guide, the entry tickets it names and lunch. On the day you will be offered extras, and guests this autumn mention the same ones: a short boat ride on the Nile (several put it at about 10 euros a person), tomb tickets beyond the ones your option includes, and drinks at lunch. Most toilets on the road and at the sites charge a small fee, so carry coins or small notes. A Dutch guest’s tip: “bring extra food”, because lunch can be as late as 2:30 pm after a 4 am start. And two guests who had booked without Tutankhamun or Ramses V and VI bought those tickets themselves at the site and found it cheaper than the add-on.
The road and the checkpoints
The road is the one on the map: south to Safaga, west through the Eastern Desert to Qena, then south along the Nile. Tour vehicles pass police checkpoints on the way, and tour traffic runs to a mandatory convoy schedule, with waiting time at the convoy checkpoints; fog and poor visibility can slow it further. That is why pickup times are set the day before, and why the drive can run longer than four hours. The UK government’s travel advice places Luxor and the Valley of the Kings outside the areas it advises against, and it also says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night. With a tour, someone else does the driving at both ends of the day. The Hurghada to Luxor guide covers the drive, the bus and private transfers.
When to go
Luxor in January is about 22°C in the afternoon and cold before dawn, which is why searches for this trip peak in winter. By July the afternoons average about 40°C, and the tombs are hotter still; a Dutch guest who went this October in “30+ degrees” wrote: “I would avoid this tour in summer (over 40) since the valley of kings is very very hot.” In summer some operators move the pickup earlier to finish before the worst of the heat. The what to wear guide has the packing list.
A day, or a night in Luxor?
One long day covers the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. A night in Luxor adds what a day trip cannot: Luxor Temple lit up in the evening, a sunrise balloon over the West Bank without a midnight start, and a second morning for Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu or the Valley of the Queens. The day trip or overnight guide compares the two-day tours and the two sides of the river.
Where to stay in Luxor for a night:
- East Bank, on the Corniche: the river-front hotels, a walk from Luxor Temple and the evening souq.
- West Bank: smaller hotels among the fields, closest to the Valley of the Kings and the balloon launch.

Luxor Day Trip from Hurghada FAQ
The questions people ask before booking the day trip from the Red Sea to Luxor, answered in the first sentence.
Yes for most visitors, if you can face about eight hours in a van for five or six hours at the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. It is the only way to see Luxor without leaving your Red Sea hotel for a night. It is less worth it in high summer, when Luxor's afternoons average about 40°C, or with very young children. The worth-it guide goes through who should go and who should stay a night.
About four hours each way: the road is about 295 km, south to Safaga, west across the desert to Qena and south along the Nile to Luxor. Tour listings give four to five hours, with one or two rest stops, and tour traffic runs to a convoy schedule with police checkpoints, so it can take longer. The Hurghada to Luxor guide has the map and the other ways to make the trip.
Between about 3:30 and 6 am, depending on the tour and on where your hotel is. Ranco Travel's Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun day collects at about 6 am; FTS Travels collects between 3:30 and 5:30 am. Operators confirm the exact time the day before, and you are back at your hotel 13 to 14 hours after you left.
From about US$57 a person by big bus to about US$93-95 for a small-group day with lunch, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. The price covers the transport, the guide, lunch and the entry tickets the listing names. On the day you may pay extra for a Nile boat ride, extra tombs, drinks, toilets and tips. The comparison table sets the four main tours side by side.
Only on some tours: Tutankhamun's tomb has its own ticket, EGP 700 on top of the EGP 750 standard Valley of the Kings ticket (egymonuments.gov.eg, October 2026). Ranco Travel's Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun day includes it; on others it is an option or an add-on. The tickets guide shows which tour includes which tomb.
Yes, but it means leaving Hurghada in the middle of the night, because the balloons go up over the West Bank at sunrise. Combined balloon-and-sightseeing days exist, and so do two-day trips with a hotel night in Luxor and the balloon the next morning, which is the gentler way. Flights are cancelled in strong wind, and in 2026 they stopped for the summer heat from 1 June to 30 August. The balloon guide compares the two.
The UK government's travel advice places Luxor and the Valley of the Kings outside the areas it advises against travelling to, and tour vehicles run with police checkpoints on the road. The same advice says not to drive outside main cities and resorts at night, which is a reason to go with a tour and a professional driver rather than hire a car. Check the advice again shortly before your trip.
October to April is the comfortable half of the year; January is the coolest month, at about 22°C in the afternoon, and the busiest. From June to August the afternoons average about 40°C and the tombs are hotter still. Pre-dawn starts in winter are cold, so bring a warm layer. The what to wear guide has the packing list.
One long day covers the Valley of the Kings and Karnak; two days add Luxor Temple at night, Hatshepsut's temple at leisure, Medinet Habu and a sunrise balloon. From Hurghada, the two-day tours with a hotel night are the easy way to do it. The day trip or overnight guide covers the tours and where to stay.
