Hurghada to Luxor
Hurghada to Luxor is about 295 km, four hours by road via Safaga and Qena. Tour, private transfer or bus, the convoy and checkpoints, pickup times (Oct 2026).
Hurghada to Luxor is about 295 km by road and about four hours by car or tour van: south along the Red Sea to Safaga, west across the Eastern Desert to Qena on the Nile, then south to Luxor. For a day trip the best way is a tour, which collects you from your hotel before dawn and drives you back the same night. Ranco Travel’s Luxor Tour with Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun is the fastest-growing of them, from US$93 a person in current promotion (usually US$98) (checked October 2026), rated 4.9 from 2,873 reviews.

The road, step by step
From central Hurghada the coast road runs south past Makadi Bay and Soma Bay to Safaga, about an hour. At Safaga the road turns inland and climbs through the Red Sea mountains into the Eastern Desert, a long, empty stretch with a rest stop or two, before it drops to the Nile at Qena. From Qena it is about an hour south along the river to Luxor. A routing engine puts the drive at about three and three-quarter hours without stops; with stops and checkpoints, tour listings give four to five hours. From Makadi Bay or Sahl Hasheesh, south of Hurghada, the road is about 30 km shorter.
The time of day matters more than the distance. A British guest picked up in Sahl Hasheesh this October left at 5:30 am, and “the drive was about 4 hours with a couple of short stops, and really didn’t feel bad at all”. On the way back, after dark, many people sleep, so a travel pillow earns its place in the bag.
The convoy and the checkpoints
Tour vans and buses on this road pass police checkpoints, and tour traffic runs to a mandatory convoy schedule, with waiting time at the convoy checkpoints, and fog or poor visibility can slow it further. In practice this means the operator, not you, sets the departure time, and the drive can run longer than the map suggests. Carry your passport.
The UK government’s travel advice for Egypt places Luxor and the Valley of the Kings outside the areas it advises against travelling to, and it also says: do not drive outside main cities and resorts at night. A Luxor day trip starts and ends in the dark, which is the best argument for a tour with a professional driver over a hire car.

A tour is the only practical way to see Luxor and be back in Hurghada the same night: it starts at your hotel and has the tickets, the guide and lunch arranged. A private transfer is for staying in Luxor: Nice Tours’ private transfer between Hurghada and Luxor takes about four hours, one way or return, with extra charges for pickups in Makadi, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Soma Bay and Safaga and for a West Bank hotel. The public bus works for the same purpose on a budget. Go Bus is the main operator on the route, and its timetable gives about four hours, though recent passengers report journeys of up to six; it leaves from the bus station on a fixed timetable, so it does not suit a same-day return. A hire car means driving the desert road in the dark at one end of the day, which the UK travel advice says not to do.
How much a taxi costs
There is no metered taxi fare for this trip: a car and driver for the day, or one way, is a negotiated price or a booked transfer. On GetYourGuide in October 2026 Nice Tours’ private transfer lists US$80 a person and Egypt Excursions Online’s one-way private transfer US$66 in current promotion (usually US$94) a person, both by private air-conditioned car with the driver’s tip extra. For a day trip, a seat on a small-group tour costs less than a private car for two, and includes the guide and the tickets.
Where to go once you are there
Luxor straddles the Nile. The tombs and the mortuary temples are on the West Bank: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, the Colossi of Memnon, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens. The city, its hotels, Karnak and Luxor Temple are on the East Bank. Several of the tours from Hurghada visit the West Bank first and finish the day at Karnak.

For a stay of a night or two, the day trip or overnight guide covers the two-day tours and where to sleep on each bank.

Rated 4.9 from 2,873 reviews, from US$93 a person as of October 2026, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
