Is a Luxor Day Trip from Hurghada Worth It?

Is the Luxor day trip from Hurghada worth 8 hours on the road? Yes for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, with caveats. Who should go, who should stay a night.

Updated October 2026

Yes, for most people staying in Hurghada: one long day buys you the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, two of the great sights of the ancient world, which nothing on the Red Sea coast comes close to. The price is about eight hours in a van, a start before dawn and a return after dark. It is not worth it in high summer if you struggle in heat, with very young children, or if you can spare a night in Luxor, which turns the same trip into an unhurried one. The day guests rate highest right now is Ranco Travel’s Luxor Tour with Valley of the Kings and Tutankhamun: 4.8 out of 5 across its 350 most recent reviews (9 to 26 October 2026), from US$93 a person in current promotion (usually US$98) (checked October 2026).

What you get for the day

Luxor is ancient Thebes, Egypt’s capital for much of the New Kingdom. A day trip gives you its two headline sites. On the West Bank, the Valley of the Kings: the rock-cut tombs of the pharaohs, three on the standard ticket plus Tutankhamun’s on the tour above, with the Colossi of Memnon on the way and Hatshepsut’s terraced temple on most other tours. On the East Bank, Karnak: the largest temple complex in Egypt, with the Great Hypostyle Hall’s 134 columns. The listing allows about two hours in the valley and two and a half at Karnak.

Guests who went this autumn say the sights carry the day. A British guest wrote: “The scale and beauty of the Temples and Tombs is mindblowing.” Another, who had doubted the drive: “Yes an early start… but well worth it.”

What it costs you

The money is the small part: from US$56 in current promotion (usually US$86) a person on a big bus to US$95 in current promotion (usually US$105) for the most reviewed small-group day, with the guide and lunch included (October 2026). The real cost is time. Pickups run from about 3:30 to 6 am depending on the operator and your hotel, the van takes about four hours each way, and you are back at your hotel 13 to 14 hours after you left. A Dutch guest’s arithmetic: “2x 4 hours travel and 5 hours in Luxor.”

Then there is what you do not get. Luxor Temple is usually a photo stop from outside; Medinet Habu, the Valley of the Queens and the tombs of the nobles are not on any day trip; and every minute is on the guide’s clock. Some guests also found the shopping stops (an alabaster workshop, a spice shop) and the paid extras on the day tiresome; the homepage lists what costs extra.

Go if this is your one chance to see the Valley of the Kings, you are travelling between October and April, and you can sleep in a van. Think twice in June to August, when Luxor’s afternoons average about 40°C; with children too young for a 14-hour day; or if you are pregnant or use a wheelchair, for whom two of these day trips are not suitable. Stay a night instead if you can: the day trip or overnight guide covers the two-day tours and where to sleep.

Luxor or Cairo?

The other big day out from Hurghada is the pyramids. The road to Cairo is longer, so the bus days are longer still, and there is a version by plane: a Cairo day trip by flight from US$268. If you can only do one, choose by what you came to Egypt for: the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum’s Tutankhamun treasure in Cairo, or the tombs, the temples and the king himself, whose mummy is still in his tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Is it safe?

The UK government’s travel advice for Egypt places Luxor and the Valley of the Kings outside the areas it advises against travelling to, and it advises against driving outside main cities and resorts at night, which is one reason to go with a tour and a professional driver rather than hire a car. Tour vehicles pass police checkpoints on the road. Read the Hurghada to Luxor guide for the road itself, and check the advice again close to your trip, because it changes.
