Luxor Day Trip or Overnight?

Day trip or a night in Luxor from Hurghada: what one night adds, the two-day tours, East Bank or West Bank hotels, and a free walking tour (Oct 2026).

Updated October 2026

One long day is enough for the Valley of the Kings and Karnak; a night in Luxor is what you need for everything else: Luxor Temple after dark, a sunrise balloon without a midnight start, and a second morning for Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu or the Valley of the Queens. If you can spare it, take the night. The simplest way from Hurghada is a two-day tour with the hotel included, such as Ranco Travel’s 2-Day Luxor Tour with Valley of the Kings, at most 9 people, from US$290 a person (checked October 2026), rated 4.8 from 45 reviews.

What a night in Luxor adds

A day trip from Hurghada gives you about five or six hours in Luxor, and the guide spends them on the Valley of the Kings and Karnak. Luxor Temple is usually a photo stop from outside. The rest of Thebes is out of reach: Medinet Habu, the Valley of the Queens with Nefertari’s tomb, the tombs of the nobles, the Luxor Museum. A night changes the arithmetic. Luxor Temple is open until 8 pm (Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, checked October 2026), so you can see it lit up in the evening. The balloons go up over the West Bank at sunrise, a short drive from your hotel instead of a drive through the night. And the second day starts with you already in Luxor, rested, instead of four hours away.

Guests notice the difference. A British guest on the day trip this October wrote “Can’t wait to come back (maybe stay in Luxor next time)”; a Japanese guest who could not take the time off said the day trip “was a perfect option for me” for exactly that reason.

Ranco Travel’s two-day tour is the full sightseeing version: Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple with an Egyptologist guide, a night in a 4-star hotel with breakfast, and lunch on both days, in a group of at most 9. The balloon, the Karnak sound and light show and a felucca to Banana Island are optional extras. Nice Tours’ 2-Day Luxor Tour with Hotel, Balloon and Boat Ride builds the trip around the sunrise balloon, with a felucca, a camel ride, a 4-star hotel with breakfast, lunch on both days and dinner on the first; entry fees are not included, so add them to the price (the tickets guide has every figure). Children under 6 cannot fly, under the civil aviation rule the listing cites.

Other Days Out from the Red Sea

More Tours from Hurghada and Luxor

If Luxor in a day is not the plan, these are the other trips and tours on sale around Hurghada and Luxor, with their own dates and cancellation terms.

Or build it yourself

The do-it-yourself version is a day trip one way and a car the other. Ranco Travel’s most reviewed day trip, the small-group Luxor day, will leave you in Luxor at the end of the tour for 10 euros extra for your luggage. Some others will not: on FTS Travels’ days everyone must return with the group. For the way back, a private car from Luxor to your Red Sea hotel takes four to five hours: Nice Tours’ private transfer lists US$80 a person and Egypt Excursions Online’s one-way transfer US$66 in current promotion (usually US$94) a person (October 2026), with extra charges for some resorts and for the West Bank on the first.

East Bank or West Bank

The Nile splits Luxor in two, and the bank you sleep on shapes the stay.

  • East Bank, on the Corniche: the river-front hotels in the city, within walking distance of Luxor Temple, the souq and the restaurants, with Karnak a short taxi ride north. The choice for a first night and for Luxor Temple after dark.
  • West Bank: smaller hotels and guesthouses among the fields, close to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's temple and the balloon launch, and quiet at night. The choice for an early start on the tombs.
  • Near Luxor Temple: the centre of the East Bank, for a night when you want to walk everywhere.

A free walking tour on the second day

If you stay the night, Luxor has free walking tours with local guides: walks around Karnak and Luxor Temple, an evening walk through the souq, West Bank walks and bike rides through the villages. See the free walking tours in Luxor on GuruWalk. GuruWalk walks are free to book and run on tips: you pay the guide what you think the walk was worth at the end.

When the day trip is the better choice

If you have one free day and a tight budget, the day trip wins: from US$56 in current promotion (usually US$86) a person by big bus, against US$270 or more for two days plus the entry fees. It also wins if the Valley of the Kings and Karnak are what you came for, and the rest of Thebes can wait for another trip. The worth-it guide covers that choice.
